Mental Toughness

March 25, 2011 By James Hill

It is not really rocket science, you eat the right food you do the training and you get through it…

But sometimes you just ask yourself why?!?!

It is a trap I have been falling in and out of for the last 2 weeks. It is that “it all just seems to hard” feeling. Day after day getting out of bed and instead of being able to grab another 20mins sleep on the ferry you’re trying to tell yourself the pain in your legs is a good thing as you pump your way up that same hill you did yesterday!

But then life slows down a bit, you have a bit more time… and for some reason it just seems like fun again.

The jog I did first thing on Monday morning gave me a bit of a scare… it felt like someone was stabbing me in the leg with every step I took on Tuesday. Hence the Wednesday jog at lunchtime.

And I was out again today for about 7km… give or take.

The weeks are ticking away! 🙂

Rain, Running and Cycling

March 23, 2011 By James Hill

The days are eroding away very quickly to the BRW mini tri on the 3rd April.

I started off this week with a jog on Monday morning, about 6am. It was a dreary morning, just lightly spitting as I set out on my usual 5km circuit along Manly beach to Shelley and back.

By the time I had return it was rain… by the time I had breakfast there was a continuous waterfall of water coming out of the skies. There was no way I was riding to work in that… though I did concider kayaking!

With the weather behaving itself I was back on the bike on Tuesday. It is becoming a pretty uneventful ride though I could really feel it in my quads from Mondays run.

On the bike again this morning, with a few extra kilos of gear as I was planning on going for a jog at lunch time (which I did). Again… very uneventful. The time it takes me to get to work doesn’t really change, which probably means I should push a little harder.

My short run at lunch ended up turning into a 11km monster… well, it was only going to be 6km but I just kept running.

Not sure how the ride home is going to go. My legs were pretty heavy by the end of the run.

Colds, Helicopters and doing good things

March 18, 2011 By James Hill

It’s Friday and just before midnight and I am doing my best to fend of a cold that is trying to cut me down. I’m winning so far… but this last couple of weeks has been hectic. Work has been intense and well I have no notion of what taking it ease for a bit really is. Hence the cold I am guessing.

So for the last couple of years I have been donating helicopter rides to auctioned off for a mate from work who is raising money for the Children Cancer Institute of Australia in the name of his 2 year old daughter who was tragically cut down by neuroblastoma at the beginning of last year.

It has always been my intention do try and raise some money for a worth cause with some of the stuff I have planned for the next couple of years… it has just been waiting for the right opportunity to come along. And that opportunity might just be here.

I am catching up with my mate and his partner on Sunday to have a chat about what I can do to do some championing work for them to raise the half billion dollars they need for research into curing this cancer.

I’m looking forward to posting more good things on this.

So much for an early night tonight…

BRW Mini Tri and Farm Life

March 16, 2011 By James Hill

It has been a while since I have posted here… very slack me. Life has been so busy I am not really sure where the last couple of weeks have gone. I’m barely managing to keep up! I am reeling the the reigns though, namely to divert my focus a little more to training.

Last week I put together a rather rushed team for the BRW Mini Tri which is happening on the 3rd of April. It is a 400m swim, 8km cycle and 4km run. I have competed in this in the previous 2 years… both years bring in a time of 37min 40sec and 37mins 20sec (a little improvement)

It would be nice to see that time drop by a few minutes… 30 would be nice, but I don’t think I have had enough structured training to be able to make a call on that.

Speaking of training, it has all been about the bike. I haven’t run or swam in weeks. This BRW will kick me into gear though… well, I hope.

This last week and a bit has seen my enthusiasm wanea little. It is getting harder to get up in the morning and jump on the bike and going home is becoming… I have to get on the bike and ride home. I need to dig down a little and pull out a bit of excitement and drive to pull myself though this lull.

The plan for the weeks leading up to the BRW is up at 6am for a 5km jog 3 days a week and then a swim 2 nights a week.

I spent last weekend down at my friend’s farm, for a little bit of cross training (which basically means I just work hard and try and wear myself out over the 2 days).

I got to play with a chainsaw for a good chunk of the weekend, clearing some trees which had been felled and moving them into erosion zone. (this is in an effort to stop erosion in certain areas of the farm). Good fun weekend with a cold beer around the fire afterwards. 🙂

Hopefully tomorrow I will be able to say how good my first morning run was. 🙂
