Very Hungry

January 13, 2011 By James Hill

Ops… didn’t click the publish button for this yesterday.

The problem with having to have blood taken for testing (part of an aviation medical) is you can’t eat before hand… this is a big problem when you are burning carbs like they are going out of fashion.

Update: Aparently I didn’t need to starve myself this morning!

I was a whole minute quicker to work this morning… OK – it is the little things you get excited about when you are starving. I have a banana, orange, muesli bar, and a couple of sandwiches staring at me just beging me to eat them… blood thing is not until 12:30. This is going to be a long morning.

The hills on the way to work aren’t hurting as much any more… though someone came racing past me like I was standing still as I was chugging along up Pirrawi Rd. I will be that person soon. 😉

I do need to have a little bit of a play around with the set up of my bike. The more time I am spending in the saddle, the more I am noticing things like the seat could be a little high and pushed back a little bit. We’re probably only talking a few millimetres, but it is surprising the difference this can make.

Day 2 – What Have I done…

January 11, 2011 By James Hill

I was awake early this morning, perhaps due to the daunting challenge I have set myself… more likely because my alarm went off and the roll over go back to sleep function didn’t work.

Last week I found I couldn’t eat enough and had massive sugar cravings… not even the bottle of soft drink I ‘stole’ from my ever so kind flat mate (which I basically inhaled)… did enough to stem the hunger. This has really highlighted to me how much nutrition is going to play a part in hitting this goal.

Back on the bike this morning after a forced weekend rest due to a broken spoke on the way home last Thursday. Fixed now thanks to the guys down at Favourite Cyclesin Manly. Great job… and they managed to fit it in despite being caught the Christmas Rush. Thanks!

The ride into work this morning felt pretty good despite being a little tired from the 10km jog yesterday (which I managed to get a little bit sun burnt on). The ride took 17.5km which took 51mins (thanks to my trusty Garmin GPS). I am looking to see this time come down over the coming weeks.

It just started to sprinkle rain as I started home across the harbour bridge this afternoon. Luckily it held out, although the light sprinkling was nice an cool. There is nothing worse than riding in the rain, poor visibility makes it harder for you to see and for cars to see you and slick tyres don’t make it any more fun in the wet. I just made it home before the skies opened up and it felt like a small ocean came down.

I will try and get some pic’s and other things up in the next couple of days.

Did something silly today… apart from start a blog.

Though probably not really surprising to most. Today I signed up for the Hawaiian Half Ironman at the beginning of June 2011.

2km Swim, 80km Cycle and a 20km run to finish it off.

Now I am not really a stranger to endurance events having completed the 100km Oxfam trail walker earlier this year as well as the 111km Hawkesbury Classic (a kayaking event)…

But this time I may have just bitten of more than I can chew! At the very least I have taken it to a new level!

Well… maybe! Nothing like a bit of challenge in life. 🙂

I guess for the next 5 months or so, this blog is going to be a bit of a record of how it all goes!

It is going to be interesting… whilst my main goal is just to complete it the event, I am pretty competitive so I will be aiming for a good time as well. (not that I really know what a good time is at the moment)

So, this is going to be a bit of a journey to see what it takes to get a semi fit person across the finish lines of  one of the best know Ironman events.

In actual fact, I started training for this last week, riding to work each day… a 36km round trip but it was only this afternoon I put my money where my mouth is and signed up. So no, “Oh it was just a spur of the moment madness”. I have been talking about it for a while… so this is very much premeditated! 🙂

So… now to put together a training program, diet program and sponsorship program to help me pay for it all!!

It is going to be an adventure!
